About us...
The materials...River City Kayaks uses only Lloyd's of London-approved 1088 okoume African marine mahogany. Both the deck and the hull use 4 mm. mahogany, and other areas use 6 mm. We use RAKA resin and hardener, and an ultraviolet-protectant varnish on the deck. The process...We use the stitch-and-glue method of building kayaks. The inside three seams are laid up with 3" fiberglass tape. The seating area receives a 24" x 72" piece of fiberglass cloth. The hull gets stained, tie-dyed, or covered with hemp. Then we apply resin and fiberglass to the hull. For added protection, the keel has 24" x 3/4" skid plates at each end of the boat. The deck gets five coats of ultraviolet-protectant varnish. Bulkheads are fiberglassed into place, then caulked. Hatch covers are formed to fit the contour of the deck. Finally, we attach decklines and strapping. Fiberglassed decks are an extra-cost option.
